Porch Concrete Coatings Around Downtown Forney's Older Houses
Three downtown Forney houses carry Texas Historical Commission markers: the 1886 McKellar House and the 1898 Brooks House on South Center Street, and the 1910 Moore House on South Bois d'Arc. Porch work on houses of that era, a few blocks off Main Street, has to start with a question. Nothing we found says what their porches are built of, or when any concrete went in. A porch on a house that old may be wood, or a slab poured decades after the house. A wood porch is outside a concrete coating, so the first thing Nick does at a downtown address is look.
If the porch is concrete, its age comes next. A slab added in the middle of the last century and one poured ten years ago need different prep. Older porch concrete often carries paint, sealer and patches, and each layer has to come off or be filled before a coating will hold. Kaufman County sits on Blackland Prairie ground that the TSHA Handbook calls clayey below the surface, and slabs on clay commonly show hairline cracks. These older streets are a small slice of the city, since about three in four Forney homes went up in 2000 or later.
Distance matters here more than on most of our pages. Most of our calendar is filled from Dallas, Collin, Denton and Rockwall counties, and Forney is in Kaufman. The run from Garland to Forney City Hall, on Pinson Road, covers 19.6 miles down US-80, and our best-case reading with light traffic was about 25 minutes; weekday traffic runs longer.
